Asia’s first demonstration of performance-based navigation for helicopters has been conducted in India. The GPS-aided geo augmented navigation (GAGAN) satellite technology was used in a flight from Mumbai to Pune. GAGAN ensures higher quality of air traffic management, enhances the location accuracy of aircraft through local geographical positioning and also helps in guided landing at airports that do not have instrument landing system facilities. It was jointly developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation and Airports Authority of India. All registered aircraft have to install GAGAN by December 2025.
