The fourth runway of IGIA in Delhi is expected to be operational from July 13, 2023. After this runway becomes operational, the other two runways comprising the main runway “10/28” between terminal 1 and 3 will be shut down for recarpeting work while the other runway which is closest to the Shivaji statue will be shut down for minor repair works by Delhi International Airport Limited. Reportedly, all four runways of the airport will become operational by July 2024 which will further enhance the flight handling capacity of the airport to over 100 flights per hour. The present peak traffic handling capacity of the airport is 86 aircraft movements per hour for three runways, which will further increase by 8 to 10 per cent with four runways in line with certain operational requirements. IGIA was ranked ninth for handling around 0.05 billion passengers under the top ten busiest airports globally in 2022.
