IR registers 2 per cent hike in freight loading in May 2023

During May 2023 Indian Railways (IR) originating freight loading stood at 134 million tonnes (mt), 2 per cent higher as compared to the corresponding period in 2022-23. Meanwhile, the national transporter has earned freight revenue of Rs 146.42 billion in May 2023 against Rs 140.84 billion freight earnings in May 2022, registering an increase of about 4 per cent over last year. During the April- May period of 2023-24, freight loading of 260.28 mt has been registered against last year loading of 253.48 mt, an increase of approximately 3 per cent over 2022-23. Meanwhile, the cumulative freight earning in April-May 2023 period stood at Rs 285.12 billion against Rs 270.66 billion over the last year which is an improvement of approximately 5 per cent as compared to the same period of the last year. IR has achieved freight loading of 65.89 mt coal, followed by 15.23 mt iron ore, 13.20 mt cement, 10.96 mt balance other goods, 6.79 mt containers, 4.89 mt fertiliser, 4.85 mt food grains and 4.23 mt mineral oil in May 2023.
