The Odisha government, on April 1, 2023, announced the development of a metro rail network in the state. The project involves the construction of a 100 km long elevated metro rail corridor connecting Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar, Puri and Khurda. In the first phase, the metro service will cover around 20 km of the area from Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar to Trishulia near Cuttack, along with major landmarks including Bhubaneswar railway station, Vani Vihar, Jaydev Vihar, Patia, and Nandankanan.
