The Ministry of Power (MoP) has notified the applicability of renewable generation obligation (RGO) to companies constructing coal- or lignite-based thermal generating stations after April 1, 2023. As per the notification, any coal- or lignite-based thermal generating station with a commercial operation date (COD) between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2025 will be required to comply with an RGO of a minimum of 40 per cent of the capacity by April 1, 2025, or procure and supply renewable energy equivalent to such capacity. Coal- or lignite-based thermal generating stations with a COD after April 1, 2025 will be required to comply with an RGO of 40 per cent by the COD. Further, captive thermal generating stations will be exempt from the RGO requirement, provided that they fulfil their renewable purchase obligations as notified.
