The MoP has notified the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2022. The Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 was passed by the Rajya Sabha on December 12, 2022, and received the President’s approval on December 19, 2022. The amendment to the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 aims to empower the central government to specify a carbon credit trading scheme. The designated consumers may be required to meet a proportion of their energy needs through non-fossil sources. The Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code will also apply to office and residential buildings with a connected load of 100 kW or above. Failure to comply with the standards will be punishable with a penalty of up to Rs 1 million.
