Reportedly, IR has earned a revenue of Rs 175.26 billion from special train services in 2021-22, which is almost 45 per cent of the total passenger revenue in the said financial year. To discourage people from travelling in the pandemic, IR operated only special train services when it resumed passenger train operations post the coronavirus pandemic in May 2020. In 2019-20, IR generated a revenue of Rs 8.04 billion from running special trains, and in 2020-21, the amount soared to Rs 120.27 billion. From the sale of passenger tickets, IR generated a total revenue of Rs 506.69 billion in 2019-20. It dropped to Rs 152.48 billion in 2020-21 after the pandemic broke out. The passenger revenue was Rs 49.21 billion in the first quarter of 2021-22, Rs 105.13 billion in the second quarter, Rs 118.73 billion in the third and Rs 117.96 billion in the final quarter, taking the total to around Rs 391.04 billion for the year.
