Suresh P. Manglani joined Adani Total Gas Limited (ATGL) as chief executive officer (CEO) in 2018. Adani Gas is one of India’s oldest private city gas distribution (CGD) companies.
According to Manglani, the initial growth phase of the company was challenging, mainly due to the slow pace of CGD additions and several ecosystem developments, permissions-related issues and customers’ unwillingness to embrace piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) as their fuel of choice.
“Back then, PNG was not easily available outside of the big cities. In fact, even in 2014, only 6 per cent of India’s population had access to PNG at home,” he recalls. According to him, Adani Gas Limited’s partnership with TotalEnergies is helping ATGL to inculcate the best global practices in setting up gas infrastructure, developing new business opportunities and sourcing gas, defining operating procedures and implementing safety measures. Under his leadership, he has transformed ATGL, including by listing the company the stock exchanges and guiding it to grow from revenues of Rs 18.95 billion in 2017-18 to Rs 32.06 billion in 2021-22. With 14 new geographical areas (GAs), won in the eleventh bidding round, ATGL now has 52 GAs, making it the largest CGD player in India serving 125 districts and 15 per cent of the population.
Manglani has more than three decades of experience in the CGD sector. He expects that with more GAs, the company’s annual spending in expanding the CGD network will increase significantly in the coming years. India’s gas sector reforms in the past few years, combined with the tenth and eleventh rounds of bidding, have significantly increased the potential of PNG and CNG across the country, he notes.
Manglani is an expert in oil and gas projects. He is a director of ATGL’s joint ventures and special purpose vehicle, and a member of many committees that have transformed the sector in recent years.
Before joining ATGL, Manglani worked with Kelvinator (now Whirlpool India), GAIL (India) Limited, Mahanagar Gas Limited, Reliance India Limited and India Gas Solutions.
Doing work that touches the lives of the masses, innovating, digitalising and trying new stuff are some of the things that are important to Manglani. Whenever he gets the time, his first priority is to be with his family, and sometimes watch movies and comedy shows.
He is also an avid reader and likes to analyse Supreme Court judgments.
