IR to double capacity of overhead power lines

IR is planning to double the capacity of overhead power lines to ensure that newer trains such as the Vande Bharat express can ply comfortably. Reportedly, the electrification of routes will now be sanctioned with 2×25 kV traction systems only. This is an upgrade from the existing 1×25 kV traction systems in place. This higher capacity electrification will complement the 75 Vande Bharat trains, which are scheduled to be launched by August 2023. Another 400 of these trains are planned to be manufactured over the next three years. A tender for upgrading electrification on 1,650 km of the high-density section between Delhi and Mugalsararai has already been awarded at a cost of around Rs 11.4 billion.
