The Assam government has decided to set up Assam Inland Waterways Company Limited to boost the river transport system in the state. The company’s mandate will be to establish, maintain and operate cost-effective water transportation services within Assam including river cruises; and develop and maintain all-weather ports, jetties and passenger terminals. The chief minister of Assam will be the chairman of the company. Further, according to the minister, the state cabinet has approved a contract for the construction of terminal and riverine infrastructure at the Guwahati Hatway Ghat at a total contract value of Rs 2.89 billion.
