The government recently approved the detailed project report (DPR) submitted by Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited for Phase I of work on Nellore airport, in public-private partnership (PPP) mode. Though the process of land acquisition for the proposed airport had already been underway, the land requirement increased to 1,861.20 acres after a proposal for operating cargo flights was prepared. The airport will feature a new passenger terminal building, an aircraft apron, a singular runway, and cargo handling and car parking facilities. It will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 3.68 billion. It is being designed to operate small ATR-72-600-type aircraft, and will be able to handle about 200 peak hour passengers.
