IR plans to restore passenger traffic to pre-pandemic levels

Indian Railways (IR) is planning to restore passenger traffic to pre-pandemic levels, although with lower revenue expectations. According to bud­get estimates for 2022-23, the national transporter is expecting to commute 8.6 billion passengers in a year. This is the same number of passengers expected by IR in the 2021-22 budget as well. Under the revised estima­tes for 2021-22, IR has set a target of 3.5 billion passengers. The footfall is expected to increase once the pandemic retreats. In terms of revenue, IR is expecting a revenue generation of Rs 610 billion from the passenger segment alone in 2022-23. Under 2021-22, the projected revenue generation from passenger traffic is Rs 443.75 billion. On the freight side, it has set a target to carry 1,475 mt of cargo in 2022-23. IR has set a revenue target of Rs 2.39 trillion for the 2023 fiscal, which is 18 per cent higher than that in 2021-22.
