Government announced plans to auction 5G spectrum in Union Budget 2022

In the Union Budget 2022, the government has confirmed that it will auction 5G spectrum in 2022, followed by the commercial roll-out of 5G mobile services in 2023 and the fiberisation of all villages by 2025. Mean­while, data centres have been given infrastructure status. In addition, 5 per cent of the Universal Services Obligation Fund would be allocated for rese­arch and development, commercialisation of new technologies and ensuring connectivity to rural areas. The budget further noted that the government will launch a design-led production-linked incentive scheme for 5G equipment, besides completing the laying of optical fibre in villages by 2025 under the PPP model.
