The central government has ordered 79 coal-based power plant units aggregating 20,500 MW of capacity across 10 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, to install emission control equipment by the end of this month, while 517 other plants have been given timeline relaxations. According to the revised categorisation of TPPs by the CPCB, these 79 coal-fired units fall in Category A of the new norms. The projects are owned by NTPC Limited, Torrent Power, Tata Power, Apraava India and the state generating companies of Maharashtra, Haryana, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.
