Operations of freight train on Haldibari-Chilahati rail route restored

In a significant step to boost railway connectivity between India and Bangladesh, regular operation of freight trains through the Haldibari-Chilahati rail route have been restored with effect from August 1, 2021. The first freight train, loaded with stones, was despatched from Damdim station of Northeast Frontier Railway to Bangladesh. The Haldibari-Chilahati rail link was inaugurated in December 2020, in a bid to boost trade relations between the two nations. It will also provide northeast India with an opportunity to enter the international market. Nearly 20 freight trains per month are expected to be interchanged through this rail link. The Haldibari-Chilahati rail link was last operational till 1965. It was part of the broad gauge main road from Kolkata to Siliguri during the partition.
