Generation and installed capacity

Power generation recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.18 per cent to reach 1,373 BUs in 2020-21 from 871 BUs in 2011-12. Thermal generation accounted for 75 per cent of the total in 2020-21, hydro and renewables accounted for 11 per cent each, and nuclear accounted for 3 per cent.

The installed capacity grew at a CAGR of 7.5 per cent between 2011-12 and 2020-21 to reach 382 GW. Renewables grew at the fastest rate during this period, recording a CAGR of over 16 per cent, followed by thermal capacity at 6.6 per cent and nuclear at about 4 per cent. Hydro capacity grew at the slowest pace, recording a CAGR of 1.9 per cent.
