NHAI’s debt reaches new high of Rs 3.17 trillion

NHAI’s debt reached a new high of Rs 3.17 trillion at the end of fiscal year 2020-21, alongside a dip in its revenues. This debt figure is 27 per cent higher than the Rs 2.49 trillion debt recorded at the end of 2019-20. Besides, according to ICRA, highway toll revenues are estimated to have fallen by 4 per cent in fiscal year 2021 to around Rs 260 billion. The ratio of NHAI’s financial liabilities to its toll revenues rose to an all-time high of 12.3 in fiscal year 2021 from 2.1 in fiscal year 2014. Reportedly, NHAI is set to borrow an additional Rs 650 billion in fiscal year 2022 to fund its highway projects. This would take its debt to nearly Rs 3.82 trillion at the end of March 2022.
