IR witnesses steep decline in revenue from platform ticket sales

Indian Railways’ (IR) earnings from platform ticket sales was severely impacted in 2020-21, declining by nearly 94 per cent as compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. The decline is due to restrictions imposed on entry into stations amidst Covid-19. IR’s revenue from the sale of platform tickets reportedly stood at Rs 1.61 billion in 2019-2020, which was the highest revenue from platform tickets for the national transporter in the past five years. It declined to an all-time low of Rs 100 million in 2020-21, until February 2021.
