IR plans to make huge investments to revamp infrastructure

IR is planning to spend Rs 2,150 billion in 2021-22 to revamp its overall infrastructure. The amount is four times higher than what IR used to spend a decade ago. Between 2009 and 2014, IR had spent Rs 459 billion on capital expenditure. The national transporter has laid new rail lines, and augmented the capacity of existing networks across 1,900 km, and has completed the electrification of 6,015 route km in 2020-21 at an investment of Rs 1,550 billion. In 2021-22, IR will be spending on the modernisation of rail infrastructure, including procuring new rakes and Vande Bharat trains, augmenting rail capacity, and other projects.
