KPPL invokes force majeure amidst Covid-19

In view of the surge in Covid-19 cases, Karaikal Port Private Limited (KPPL) has invoked force majeure at its port in Karaikal, with effect from May 10, 2021. As per the notification issued by KPPL, the port’s operation/performance (including but not limited to unloading, loading, receipt and despatches) is being severely affected by the increasing number of Covid-19 cases. The notification further added that KPPL will not be responsible for any claims arising out of and/or connected to the above force majeure event, either directly or indirectly. These events would include vessel demurrages due to pre-berthing or any other delays. Further, the discharge rate guaranteed under the agreement will not be applicable for all vessels to be handled at Karaikal port during the force majeure period. In due course, KPPL will notify the cessation of force majeure based on further notifications/directives from the central and state governments.
