Natural resources, including materials, water, energy and fertile soil, are the basis for sustaining society. However, the activities of the large and growing human population are rapidly eroding many of the world’s natural resources, while a large part of an increasingly urban global population is still struggling to meet basic needs. Over the next 30 to 40 years, unprecedented volatility and uncertainty seem likely.
The global population is estimated to increase to around 8 billion by 2030, probably to over 9 billion by 2050, with increases in average wealth further raising the demand for products and services. As a result, competition for land, water and energy could intensify while the effects of climate change are likely to become increasingly apparent. Because the idea of a circular economy proposes a real paradigm shift and a different way of thinking about the economy, it cannot easily be reduced to one simple definition. It entails gradually decoupling economic activity from the consumption of finite resources, and designing waste out of the system. Underpinned by a transition to renewable energy sources, the circular model builds economic, natural, and social capital.
