The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started planning for Phase II of the Bharatmala Pariyojana and has identified roads with a cumulative length of 5,000 km to be built under the project. NHAI is now preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for projects to be built under Phase II. In the second phase, the government will largely focus on expressways and access-control highways. Phase II of the programme is expected to receive government approval even before Phase I is complete. NHAI is also building a land bank to see that projects are not hit by land acquisition issues.
