In another major development, Indian Railways has achieved twice the speed on freight trains as compared to 2019-20. Indian Railways has successfully converted lockdown into opportunity, thereby resulting in long-term gains. Now on, freight trains will be a part of the zero-based timetable. Indian Railways is expected to achieve its target of gaining 44 per cent modal share by 2051 and double freight volumes by 2040. Dedicated freight corridors are expected to lower the operating cost of rail freight transport by about 40 per cent.
