Akhil Gupta has been working at Afcons Infrastructure Limited for seven years and is responsible for the company’s business from the surface transport sector, their biggest vertical. For the current financial year, he is looking at procuring business of around Rs 60 billion and achieving a turnover target of around Rs 40 billion. However, during the ongoing pandemic, it has been challenging to secure business, particularly when overseas markets do not have much to offer and opportunities in the near future are not many. In India, while there are opportunities in the road sector, the railway sector does not offer many opportunities in the engineering, procurement and construction space. Afcons has a good order backlog and while there have been challenges in achieving the desired targets due to labour migration, the company has been taking the necessary steps to get back on track.
Apart from being whole-time director on the board of the company, Gupta is also responsible for charting out the growth path for the surface transport business comprising highways, roads, expressways and bridges. The segment, contributing to about 40 per cent of Afcons’ annual turnover, has been witnessing a year-on-year growth of over 20 per cent (on CAGR basis).
So far, Gupta has had a great journey and experience at Afcons. Working on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway project has been very exciting for him, and his team was able to complete it in a span of about 22 months, as against the deadline of 36 months. Expanding Afcons’ business in surface transport in Africa, Bangladesh and Middle East has been a very satisfying and enriching journey for him during the past seven years. He has spearheaded successful delivery of several landmark projects in these countries and India. His belief in people and his ability to closely work with them gives him a lot of strength and satisfaction. Apart from professional support, an adequate work-life balance for all team members is the cornerstone of Afcons’ philosophy.
With 39 years of experience in the infrastructure industry, Gupta is a civil engineering graduate from IIT Roorkee, and has a master’s degree in management from IIT Delhi. A sports enthusiast, he regularly participates in marathons across the country. He also has a keen interest in billiards. His other hobbies include numismatics as well as reading. His wife, a homemaker, has been a pillar of strength for him all through.
