Mumbai faced severe power outage on October 12, 2020

Large parts of Mumbai and its suburbs faced a major power outage on October 12, 2020 owing to failure of certain transmission elements. Reportedly, a technical failure in one of the circuits of a 400 kV line of Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (Mahatransco) at the Kalwa-Padha GIS Centre led to the power failure. One of the circuits, the 400 kV Kalwa-Padgha Circuit 2, tripped suddenly, further tripping the 400 kV Kalwa-Kharghar Circuit due to overload while Padgha Circuit 1 was already facing an outage and the 400 kV Kalwa-Talegaon Circuit had been shut down. Three discoms in the city – Tata Power, BEST Electricity and Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited – experienced power cuts in their respective areas. A central team comprising officials from the Central Electricity Authority has been sent to Mumbai to study the power breakdown and assist the state government in finding solutions to such situations. The Maharashtra government has also taken serious cognisance of the outage and ordered an immediate probe into it. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission has appointed a three-member committee to conduct an enquiry into the outage and submit a report within three months.
