MoP mandates all discoms to comply with Energy Conservation

The MoP has made it mandatory for all the distribution companies in the country to comply with the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001. The power ministry had issued a notification in September stating that all distribution licensees under the Electricity Act, 2003 are notified as designated consumers. After this notification, all the discoms will be governed under the provisions of Energy Conservation Act, such as appointment of energy managers, energy accounting and auditing, identification of category-wise energy losses and implementation of energy conservation and efficiency measures. Earlier, only discoms with annual energy losses above 1,000 MUs were covered as designated consumers. With this notification, the number of discoms covered under the Energy Conservation Act will increase from 44 to 102.
