The Chennai division of Southern Railway has developed a battery-cum–AC operated dual-mode locomotive, Pasumai, to work both in electric and non-electric/unwired sections. The technical specifications include a tractive effort of 110 HP in AC mode and 14.76 kilonewton in battery mode. It has a haulage capacity of 1,080 tonnes (equivalent to the weight of 24 coaches) with a maximum shunting speed of 15 kmph. The Pasumai locomotive is expected to ease the shunting requirements of 24-coach empty rakes. It can also be utilised in the event of an accident to reach breakdown spots even when overhead equipment supply is not available.
