In June 2020, the Kerala cabinet approved the project DPR. It will now be submitted to the Ministry of Railways, NitiAayog and Union Cabinet for further approval. Besides,

K-Rail, has initiated the process to raise a loan worth Rs 337 billion from international financial institutions for the project. The union cabinet has granted approval to the implementing agency to hold consultations with ADB, JICA, the German Development Bank and AIIB for mobilising the loan. The balance cost would be provided by the central and state governments and private equity funds.
