The Kerala government signed a concession agreement for the project with Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZL) in August 2015, 25 years after it was conceived. Since the start of its construction, the project has faced several hiccups, first due to the shortage of limestone at the construction site and the damages caused by the Ockhi cyclone and then due to the outbreak of Covid-19. Owing to the pandemic and the subsequent force majeure events, the Kerala government has agreed to grant time extension to APSEZL for the project. Vizhinjam port is being developed as a deep-water, multi-purpose, container transshipment port. Phase I of the port will have an 800 metre berth capable of handling 1 million TEUs of throughput.
