The 1,320 Udangudi supercritical power project in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu was conceived in 2007 to address the power shortages in the state, which has seen little addition to its power generation capacity in the past decade or so. The project entails an investment of Rs 131 billion and has a financial tie-up with REC Limited for the same. The first 660 MW unit of the project is likely to be commissioned in March 2021 and the second 660 MW unit is likely to be commissioned by May 2021.
