The PradhanMantriUrja Ganga (PMUG) project was launched in 2015 with the aim to connect eastern India to the pipeline network and strengthen the gas-based economy in the country. The project involves the development of the 2,655 km Jagdishpur-Haldia-Bokaro-Dhamra pipeline and the 729 km Barauni-Guwahati pipeline. It is being implemented in three phases. The Jagdishpur-Haldia pipeline (Section 1) has been completed. Further, work is under way on the Dhamra-Angul pipeline (Section 2A), the Dobhi-Durgapur pipeline (Section 2B), the Bokaro-Angul pipeline (Section 3A) and the Durgapur-Haldia pipeline (Section 3B), slated for completion by December 2020. The work on the Barauni-Guwahati section is also progressing well and is expected to be completed by December 2021. The project is the first gas pipeline project in the country to receive a viability gap funding of 40 per cent of the project cost, amounting to Rs 51.76 billion.
