The project will help in ensuring uninterrupted natural gas supply to consumers and accelerate the economic growth in the region. It will be implemented by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited, a JV of state-owned GAIL India, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Oil India Limited and Numaligarh Refinery Limited. In January 2020, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved Rs 55.59 billion viability gap funding for the proposed North East Gas Grid. It would be connected with the upcoming Barauni-Guwahati pipeline under the PMUG project. The grid will be designed with flexibility for gas injection in either direction.
