Conceived in 2003, the project has remained on the drawing board for long and has missed several deadlines. This can be attributed to delays in land acquisition, rehabilitation issues, weather conditions, slow pre-development works, etc. The nationwide lockdown to control the spread of Covid-19 further delayed the project. After several hiccups, work on the project resumed in May 2020, although in limited capacity in view of the physical distancing norms. The second airport in the Mumbai region, the greenfield international airport will be built on 1,160 hectares of land. It would initially be able to handle a passenger footfall of 10 million, which would then be increased to 20 million and eventually to 60 million.
