The works under the Mumbai Sewerage Disposal Project Stage II are divided into five phases and those in the first two phases are priority works to be undertaken at a cost of Rs 140 billion. The works include setting up seven WWTPs at Colaba, Worli, Dharavi, Versova, Ghatkopar and Bhandup. The plants will treat over 2,800 mld of sewage treatment capacity. On November 21, 2016, the Maharashtra administration laid the foundation stone for the Colaba WWTP and started the construction work. On June 12, 2020, the central government awarded a contract worth Rs 11.26 billion to China-based firm Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company Limited for the construction of sewer tunnels from Don Bosco to New Malad IPS (Phase 1) and from the Goregaon pumping station to New Malad IPS (Phase 2) through the segmental tunnelling method under the project. Funds worth Rs 4.02 billion have been earmarked for the project under the state budget 2020-21.
