Nuclear major NPCIL is setting up Units 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu. The project marks the expansion of the flagship KNPP set up in 2016, the country’s largest nuclear project till date. It currently has two units of 1,000 MW each. Units 3 and 4 will be equipped with pressurised water reactors of 1,000 MW each and will be commissioned by March 2023 and November 2023 respectively. The project entails an estimated investment of about Rs 398 billion, which is nearly double the cost of KNPP Units 1 and 2, owing to the liability clause.
