The country’s busiest airport is undergoing expansion in order to handle a larger number of flights, provide better services and seamless connectivity, and become future-ready. As part of the Master Plan 2016, the airport expansion works involve the integration of arrival and departure terminals at T1, and construction of a fourth runway, a new T1 apron, dual elevated eastern cross taxiways, and additional vehicular traffic lanes. The airport expansion works would also see the deployment of smart technologies including facial recognition, individual carrier systems, automated tray retrieval systems, self baggage drop kiosks, etc. Just like other infrastructure projects, the Delhi airport expansion works have been amongst the Covid casualties. Phase I of the project is now expected to be completed by end 2023 instead of its earlier deadline of June 2022.
