NRL awards refinery expansion project to Thyssenkrupp

Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has awarded a Rs 3 billion refinery expansion project to Thyssenkrupp’s plant engineering business. Under the order, Thyssenkrupp will provide engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services for various units of the refinery located in Numaligarh. NRL is expanding its refining capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 9 mtpa. The project is expected to be completed by 2024.

The scope of the project includes EPCM services for a new petrochemical fluidised catalytic cracking unit with a 2 mtpa capacity, liquefied petroleum gas treatment and gasoline desulphurisation units, motor spirit blocks with naphtha hydrotreating, and continuous catalytic reforming and isomerisation units.

The refinery expansion project is part of the government’s Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for the north-eastern region. The efforts are aimed at exploiting the region’s hydrocarbon sector to facilitate economic development, enhance access to clean fuels, increase the availability of petroleum products and create employment opportunities.
