About 40 per cent of the construction work on the 890 km Char Dham highway project has been completed. With about 31 per cent of the road network under the project either stuck or yet to be awarded owing to forest and environmental clearance issues, the project is likely to be delayed by two-three years. The project to expand the 890 km highway connecting Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri to two and a half lanes was launched in December 2016 with December 2020 as the completion deadline. Reportedly, while 13 out of 53 civil contract packages totalling 153 km are yet to be bid out, work has almost stopped on another five packages spanning 122 km.
