Cabinet approves Personal Data Protection Bill

In a key move, the Union cabinet has given its nod to the Personal Data Protection Bill. Through this bill, the government aims to lay down a framework that will include processing of personal and private data by public and private entities, among others. The law will look into broad guidelines on collection, storage and processing of personal data, consent of individuals, penalties and compensation, code of conduct and an enforcement model. The bill has been referred to a joint selection committee, which will submit its report before the end of the Budget Session in 2020.
