Railways planning to form two new companies for controlling coach and engine production

IR is planning to form two new central public sector undertakings as holding companies to monitor coach and engine production. The proposal for the project is expected to come up for inter-ministerial consultation soon. It will lead to the setting up of a new Indian Railway Motive Power Company to own and run factories like the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works and the Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi, and those in Madhepura and Marhowra in Bihar. IR is also gearing up to establish the Indian Railway Rolling Stock Company to own and operate coach-making plants such as the Modern Coach Factory in Rae Bareli, and wheel factories. It will allow India to catch up with other countries in terms of modern technological advances in developing railway rolling stock.
