IR to become a net zero carbon emitter by 2030

IR is aiming to become a net zero-carbon emitter by the year 2030, as part of the country’s strategy to combat climate change. Various energy efficiency measures are being taken by the railways to reduce its carbon footprint. By 2023, IR will the first railway system of its size in the world to achieve 100 per cent electrification. Further, it plans to source 10 per cent of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources by 2020. IR has also commenced recycling of solid waste and generating energy from it. Fitting bio-toilets in its entire 55,000-strong fleet of coaches by end-2019 is another green initiative being planned.
