Parliament passes AERA Amendment Bill, 2019

The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India [AERA] Amendment Bill, 2019, was passed by Parliament on August 2, 2019, allowing AERA to bid out new airports at a predetermined tariff structure. With this, the threshold for airports to be classified as major airports has been raised from a handling capacity of 1.5 million passengers per annum (mppa) currently to 3.5 mppa. The move has also reduced the ambit of AERA’s authority as the number of major airports gets reduced from the current 31 to just 16.
