NITI Aayog recommends switch to EVs in a phased manner

NITI Aayog’s steering committee on transformative mobility has recommended a complete switch to electric three-wheelers and two-wheelers in a phased manner, starting from March 31, 2023. The committee has also proposed banning all internal combustion engine (ICE) three-wheelers by March 31, 2023, and two-wheelers below 150 cc by March 31, 2025. It was suggested that the polluter-pays principle be followed with a penalty on ICE vehicles and the funds thus collected be utilised for offering a rebate on the purchase of electric vehicles, setting up of charging infrastructure and establishing battery plants.
