Power generation recorded a compound annual growth rate of 5.66 per cent to reach 1,244,930 MUs in 2018-19 from 717,894 MUs in 2008-09. Thermal generation accounted for 86 per cent of the total in 2018-19, while hydro and nuclear accounted for 11 per cent and 3 per cent respectively.

The year 2018-19 saw a capacity addition of 14,705 MW, lower than the 21,293 MW in 2017-18. In 2018-19, the renewable energy segment accounted for the maximum at 8,783 MW, followed by thermal and hydro. No nuclear capacity was added in 2018-19.
