The central government inaugurated the Kannur international airport in Kerala on December 9, 2018. The airport was developed at an estimated cost of Rs 23.5 billion through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), Kannur International Airport Limited. To mark the commencement of operations, Air India Express launched an inaugural flight from the airport to Abu Dhabi. In another development, the Andhra Pradesh government inaugurated the Orvakal greenfield airport in Kurnool district of the state on January 9, 2019. The airport was developed at an investment of Rs 1.1 billion by the implementing agency, Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited. With this development, commercial flight services from the airport are expected to commence by April 2019 under the regional connectivity scheme (RCS). Once commercially operationalised, Orvakal airport will be the seventh airport to start operations in Andhra Pradesh while Kannur airport is the fourth international airport in Kerala.
