IR plans to increase speed of Kalka-Shimla trains

IR’s research and development wing, the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), is taking steps to increase the speed of trains on the Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge route from the current 25 km per hour to 35 km per hour. The ultimate target is to increase the speed to 50 km per hour. The route has 102 tunnels, 889 bridges and 913 curves, many of which are at an incline of 48-120 degrees, making it difficult for trains to gain speed. To enhance the speed, the RDSO needs to improve the curves and replace old rails with new ones.
