DLW converts diesel locomotive to electric traction

In line with IR’s decision to convert its diesel locomotives into electric ones, Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi has converted a WDG3-class 2,600 HP diesel locomotive to an electric one, which delivers 5,000 HP. In its maiden journey from Varanasi to Ludhiana, this electric locomotive, developed under the Make in India initiative, has successfully completed trials and towed 5,200 tonnes of freight. This initiative by IR will help in saving costs, reducing emissions and facilitating faster movement.
