IR has taken up the elimination of unmanned level crossings (UMLCs) on broad gauge routes in Mission Mode. There were 3,479 UMLCs on broad gauge routes as on April 1, 2018. Of these, 3,402 UMLCs have been eliminated and the remaining 77 are planned to be removed by December 2018. So far, 12 zonal railways have been fully freed from UMLCs. Most of the UMLCs have been removed either by provision of a subway, road underbridge or by level crossing manning.
