Government devising a gas allocation mechanism for electricity generators

The government is considering a gas allocation mechanism for electricity generating units by pooling deep sea gas sourced by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) with imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). It is also considering subsidising tariffs to revive projects of about 25,000 MW of operational gas-based capacity, which is currently stressed due to gas unavailability. The scheme is currently being discussed by a cabinet secretary-led high-level empowered committee. If it comes into effect, it will be operational for the next two financial years.
