The Corporation of Chennai has passed a council resolution for the installation of two waste-to-energy (WtE) plants at the Kodungaiyur and Perungudi landfills in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The project also involves the construction of piggyback engineered landfills (PBELs) on existing landfills. The operations and maintenance (O&M) cost of the Kodungaiyur and Perungudi WtE plants is estimated to be Rs 12,435 million and Rs 11,634.3 million respectively. The two PBELs will entail an O&M cost of Rs 2,580.8 million each. The project will be implemented on a design- build-operate-transfer basis. The period of completion of the work is five years and the O&M period is 20 years.
